Stylist, wardrobe consultant and mastermind behind the “Wrong Shoe Theory”, Allison Bornstein talks a lot about the challenge of adding depth and texture to a look as we shed layers for summer dressing.
As counterintuitive as it may seem, I find myself gravitating to suede this time of year to provide some much-needed contrast and textural diversity to what can otherwise feel like a flat look. Given the constraints of a hot and humid NYC summer, shoes, bags and belts tend to be the most practical way to incorporate this traditionally fall/winter material.
My go-tos have been these green suede A.Emery Kinto flip flops in the color hazel suede (also like this style and find this brand to be super comfortable/great quality for the price point) and my old Khaite lotus chocolate brown suede bag (updated version here), which I originally got in the height of Fall but continue to wear in the warmer months to provide a bit more interest to a look when traditional layering isn’t an option.

I have also been reaching for these parchment colored suede Row Boheme Mary Jane flats to pair with oversized white and sun-washed denim.

Let me persuede you
As we (sadly) enter the latter half of summer suede accessories feel like the ideal, easily justifiable purchase. The perfect transition material to begin to pepper into your wardrobe this July / August and then serve as a backbone staple during the fall and winter months.
I love everything about this recent look from Kallmeyer and find the green suede satchel (folded over so cool and effortlessly as a clutch) provides the needed textural punch.
I have my eye on this new suede Bindle Bag from The Row. I love the color of the suede, the size and the casual slouch of the shape.
I’ve recently been drawn to more feminine gladiator-esque sandals and find the way they sit higher above the ankle to be so flattering. This suede pair from Amanu caught my eye.
